    Better than I remembered

    Better than I expected, for late sixties fare. Roughly follows the history/legend of Alfred the Great. The sparse number of extras in some of the battle scenes, might cause you to channel your inner Monty Python. This is not to say they are cheesy, just not to scale. All things considered, I prefer this to CGI. David Hemmings (the perennial sixties youthful dude) is an adequate Alfred. An unbelievably young Michael York, is convincing as the Viking antagonist. For fun, see if you can spot Ian McKellen. While no "Man for all Seasons" or "Becket", this movie is worth a view. The subject is more than ripe for a remake. Maybe Hollywood could revisit this again, when they run out of comic book retreads.

    Alfred is the only English King to be call the Great. he was the king to stop the Viking from taking England. before him England was a lot small chieftains. he made it a kingdom. these movie was made before computer so the action was real..

    "Alfred the Great" is well worth buying, watching and keeping in our historical movie library.

    Historically, the movie "Alfred the Great" was filled with historical facts and yet fleshed with real people. My husband and I thoroughly enjoy watching historical movies and this one was no different.

    Great old, hard to find movie

    I have been trying to find a copy of this movie literally since I first saw it back in 1968. Of course, you could not get copies until the 1990's or later, I guess, but I finally saw this one and snapped it up immediately. Like a trip down memory lane. Loved watching it again after nearly 50 years. Great product at a good price. Came quickly and as advertised. A rousing historical drama with a British cast. A fascinating character in history - one who deserves more attention. This movie being now available will help spread his fame and acclaim. Buy it and add it to your library, especially if you are a history buff.
