Though this story is quite interesting and concerns 2 men and their striving for honour, this is really just another variation of the need for the human male to be tribal and slaughter and annihilate anyone not of his own clan. It could be about Irish Protestants and Catholics, or Bosnian Muslims and Christians or just dreary old Hotspur and Gunner fans, and it has nothing new to say on the subject, rather just glories in the state of being a bloke. In situ it concerns a very likable Channing Tatum playing the Roman Centurion Marcus Flavius Aquila who is intent on retrieving his family honour by recapturing the Eagle Standard that was under his father’s command and stolen by a tribe of Picts, when Marcus was a boy. Through his own humanity he acquires by default a British Slave called Esca, whose life he saves. Esca is the bound by his own code of honour to serve Marcus. So they travel alone way beyond Hadrian’s Wall and eventually steal the Eagle back from the Seal People, a barbaric tribe who live on the West Highland Coast. Of course what makes this story interesting is the relationship between the 2 men, and during the course of the film their roles of slave and master become reversed until eventually, in their relationship, they become equals to each other. Though not really homo-erotic they do develop an obvious respect and love for each other. Of course the casting doesn’t work against this, Tatum is dark and brawny, though most of the time physically vulnerable through sickness , and Bell is fair and slight, though full if vim and stamina as well as being caring and nurturing. No they could pass off very well as a gay couple, with no problem. And thank goodness for this angle otherwis this film would have just been another very boring testosterone film-fest of male slaughter.Read full review
Excellent adaptation for the cinema of Rosemary Sutcliff's Eagle of the Ninth. A great introduction to history for children of aged 10 plus, depending of course on the child! The actors engage you from the beginning in their different quests. Roman history made accessible, while having a great adventure story.
