With it's successor going for twice as much on the used market (when it can be found) and Nikon's shipping schedule as inconsistent as it can be just when you're looking to them for the newer LS-9000, the 8000ED becomes a real alternative, especially when, with a little research, you begin to realize that even though the 9000 solved the few problems the 8000 has, those problems are minor and always ready for a simple work around that can result in scans to be proud of even if the process might become somewhat lengthened. In the end it's about image quality; color, contrast and resolution along with a basis for beautiful output. At today's used price, the Coolscan LS-8000ED is more than hard to beat. The gratification your film should engender as it moves to be seen in the digital world will come well within reach with the 8000ED.Read full review
It took me awhile to actually use this scanner. It keeps wanting to scan medium format film instead of 35mm film. it has taken me a whole day to figure out how to get it to scan my 35mm film. I am using a Gigabyte X399 Designaire EX computer with 32gb of ram running Windows 10 Pro.. My previous scanner is a Minolta Scan Dual III.

the most useful info i can tell you is that i have had $15 drum scans done for me of medium format and 3 out of 4 look great and are about 100mb. this scanner blows them away !!! i have to scan all of my medium format and on location 35mm film. bit difficult to set up but got it working. one scan got 230mb on medium format 160vc film. jaw dropping detail, then next scan was off by half a frame. made the fatal mistake of touching the film tray and it jammed up and wont reset. this thing is VERY sensitive so watch it. now i have to send it for service. still happy i got one just wish it would have been as durable as a tank since it weighs as much as one.
This is a solidly built unit that is giving me good results. Not fast, not flashy but does the job. I had to find an older computer with firewire and XP. Once I got that set up, then the machine and software worked fine. It is not a miracle machine in that it does not revive old negatives to get prints equivalent to the old darkroom prints, but it does get a good and usable result.
