Ottobre 1910: Tolstoj, ottantaduenne, abbandona segretamente la tenuta di Jasnaja Poljana e, in compagnia della figlia Aleksandra e del dottor Makovickij, parte in incognito su un vagone di seconda classe; ma un malore colpisce il grande vecchio, e i tre fuggiaschi sono costretti a fermarsi ad Astapovo. Nel giro di poche ore la stazioncina sperduta "alla periferia dell'impero" diventa "il centro del mondo": l'afflusso di corrispondenti delle maggiori testate russe, di fotografi e cineoperatori è infatti massiccio e tempestivo. E proprio alla stampa spetterà il ruolo principale nella vicenda. Nei decenni successivi alla morte di Tolstoj molti dei suoi discepoli e quasi tutti i suoi figli sentirono il bisogno di pubblicare testi memorialistici e spesso risentitamente polemici, con l'intento di ristabilire la "verità" sulla fine dello scrittore e sulle ragioni della sua fuga.
