Fee Fi Fo Fixer - I've had my Shredder

Competitive price, delivered promptly, no problem with the transaction.. I chose a Bosch model specifically because of quality/reliability. I have several Bosch power tools, while my daughter's Bosch washing machine is nearly 12 years old and although given a family-of -four thrashing throughout that time, it shows no sign of packing up. I have had a 'test' run and while it worked just fine, bits of shredded material blew all over. A design which incorporated a chute to which a bag or sack could be tied/clipped on (or similar) would make a tidier job and have the shreddings contained ready for disposal. That's my only reservation. That said, I'm very glad I got it. Just need some dry weather to catch up on rubbish disposal!! Overall, 8 out of 10.

  • Most critical review

    Good for normal gardening waste.

Although the same make and model reference as my old machine this turned out to be a fast spinning shredder whilst my old version was a slow powerful grinder. If you want to shred small stuff this is great but watch out because if you allow the pile of shredded material to block the outlet it will quickly back up and you will need to stop it and clear it which whilst relatively easy is a bit of a pain. You will need ear plugs even though its supposed to be quiet. need to also be careful when feeding the thicker branches that you feed them into the right half of the hopper or it can ping you a nasty wrap on the fingers. I cant say I am in love with it but Im not totally unhappy. It doesnt come with a bag which is daft, use an ikea one and save £20.

  • Pricey, but good quality machine

I couldn't see the full value in a brand new machine, but a decently priced used machine is a worthy investment. Very noisy electric motor (ear protection a must), but it's a sign of how powerful this machine is. Best for freshly cut greenery. Can munchies its way through evergreen softwood upto 50mm thick. Cutting dry branches doesn't work as well, so try to shred as soon as you've pruned. Keeping the blade sharp is essential. The blade is double sided, so you can flip it during a big job and use the opposite side in a couple of minutes. Sharpen the blade with a flat file to extend its life. Plenty of YouTube videos on how to sharpen lawnmower blades (similar thing). Don't be tempted to buy a non-genuine replacement blade, as they are the wrong dimensions and the metal is too soft ...

  • Good when you know how to use it.

I've had a few shredders over the years, all of them the "thrash & bash" type. The previous one was a Bosch ATX 2000, which went for about 6 years before it failed (wouldn't run at all). After researching the market again, I eventually decided to buy another Bosch, because the ATX 2000 had been the best of the bunch. The ATX 22000 doesn't disappoint in its shredding, mainly because I have learned ways to deal with performance that is below Bosch's claims - those claims are a bit optimistic. It won't shred 40mm diameter twigs unless I twist them as I feed them in. It produces long thin strips when thinner twigs are fed in, but I take the strips from the bag and feed them through repeatedly until they come out a size I'm happy with. It does clog up sometimes, but all "thrash & bash" ...

  • Stood up well to some serious overuse.

I bought one of these 3 years ago & was initially disappointed, with the unit not doing a very good job of shredding, then failing inside a few months (the disc holding the blade failed). Bosch supplied a new replacement & since then, I'd guess I've fed enough privet, buddleia, hawthorn & other stuff through it to fill at least ten of the bulk bags builders merchants use for sand without issue. Then yesterday ( a week out of warranty) it broke again after some really hard use helping clear up a friend's overgrown hedge. Three new parts ordered & for £50 it'll be as good as new. Not the fault of the machine but rather it being tasked with far more than any normal domestic user would throw at it, as that friend's hedge had already filled three bulk bags with shreddings. For normal garden ...
