Who is this for? Not kids.
This book and CD seemed aimed at children, specifically young children who love songs played over and over. When I played it, I realized that it is NOT. The words are sung way too fast for a child (or even an adult) to understand them. The music does not fit the rhythm that is suitable for a child to sing. It is more like an inscrutable musical show-off piece that is jarring to the ears. My grandson, almost 3, didn't get into it at all. We own more than 500 CDs, and this is one of our favorites. It's an amazingly clever and funny pastiche of every kind of Broadway show tune imaginable, including yearning ballad (sung to a jar of cookies on a shelf too high to reach), chorus line number (sung by remarkable cows), Gilbert & Sullivan patter song, Margaritaville tune ("Pig Island"), zoot-suit swing ("Philadelphia Chickens"), etc. The fact that one 3-year-old didn't like it does NOT mean that this isn't kid-friendly---ours loved it! With the great variety of styles included, I think this has wide (if not universal) appeal. Oh, and if you get the version with the book, little ones (and not-so-little ones) can enjoy Boynton's amusing illustrations, and there are sheet-music excerpts of the melodies! A terrific package!
