About this product

Product Information

In this wacky satire on the cold war mentality, the president of the United States and an arms manufacturer find it in their best economic interests to plant rumors of a potential nuclear attack--by Canada. Then, following a border incident at a hockey tournament, a patriotic sheriff and his deputies plan a counteroffensive...with hilarious results. Directed by activist-writer-television mogul Michael Moore, CANADIAN BACON combines the talents of John Candy and Dan Aykroyd with such actors and comedians as Steven Wright, Rip Torn, and James Belushi. The film is reminiscent of the terrific Peter Sellers vehicle THE MOUSE THAT ROARED, which dealt with the Duchy of Grand Fenwick declaring war on the United States in order to lose and receive millions in reparations.

Someways funnier than the first viewing

Saw this movie years ago and found it funny in a wry sort of way. Bought this copy as a gift for a Canadian friend. After seeing it for the 2nd time I was struck how some of the gags and characterizations had taken on (I'm sure not intended by the original Producer/Director) new and more poignant meaning. The experience of 8 years of the Obama administration had taken some of the exaggerated characterizations of the US political elite out of the realm of fantasy and moved them into factual history. Still a cute and cleaver comedy worth seeing. A bit too broad and slap stick toward the end, but worth a laugh.

  • Needs SDH or CC captioning in english.

Beware if you need captions - Captions only come in French and Spanish - not much good for the English hard-of-hearing viewers....

  • You don’t have to be Canadian...

To appreciate this movie but it helps if you live near the US/Canada border! The humor is spot on, an under-appreciated classic!

  • Funny, biting.

Really clever, like all Michael Moore.s films. Hope Trump doesn't watch it - he might get an idea.

  • Canadian Bacon, John Candy's next to last movie

This movie is good, despite being directed by left-winger Micheal Moore. I don't buy all the "government is out to get you" hooplah and the undertone that Americans are all war-mongers, but I still find it funny when fun is being poked at those ideas. Bottom Line: Worth a watch for a humurous story line and funny on screen moments from John Candy, Rhea Pearlman, Steven Wright, Rip Torn and Alan Alda.
