Synopsis
A Navy SEAL's firsthand account of American heroism during a secret military operation in Afghanistan. Inspiration for a major motion picture by Mark Wahlberg. On a clear night in late June 2005, four U.S. Navy SEALs left their base in northern Afghanistan for the mountainous Pakistani border. Their mission was to capture or kill a notorious al Qaeda leader known to be ensconced in a Taliban stronghold surrounded by a small but heavily armed force. Less then twenty-four hours later, only one of those Navy SEALs remained alive. This is the story of fire team leader Marcus Luttrell, the sole survivor of Operation Redwing, and the desperate battle in the mountains that led, ultimately, to the largest loss of life in Navy SEAL history. But it is also, more than anything, the story of his teammates, who fought ferociously beside him until he was the last one left-blasted unconscious by a rocket grenade, blown over a cliff, but still armed and still breathing. Over the next four days, badly injured and presumed dead, Luttrell fought off six al Qaeda assassins who were sent to finish him, then crawled for seven miles through the mountains before he was taken in by a Pashtun tribe, who risked everything to protect him from the encircling Taliban killers. A six-foot-five-inch Texan, Leading Petty Officer Luttrell takes us, blow-by-blow, through the brutal training of America's warrior elite and the relentless rites of passage required by the Navy SEALs. He transports us to a monstrous battle fought in the desolate peaks of Afghanistan, where the beleaguered American team plummeted headlong a thousand feet down a mountain as they fought back through flying shale and rocks. In this rich, moving chronicle of courage, honor, and patriotism, Marcus Luttrell delivers one of the most powerful narratives ever written about modern warfare-and a tribute to his teammates, who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country., Four U.S. Navy SEALs fought to the death against 150 armed Taliban in the Afghan mountains. Now, two years later, the lone SEAL survivor pens this spellbinding, first-hand account, a heartbreaking, yet inspiring story of heroism, courage, and sacrifice. 8-page b & w photo insert., Follow along a Navy SEAL's firsthand account of American heroism during a secret military operation in Afghanistan in this true story of survival and difficult choices. Besides some old glue left over from what I imagine were long-removed price stickers on the covers, the books were kept otherwise in near mint condition, priced affordably, and shipped and packaged with great care, arriving speedily to boot. Would surely recommend this seller.

I was actually very impressed. The book arrived in perfect condition in a box which actually surprised me! The seller actually went to the extra effort of putting a clear book cover (possibly polypropylene?) Over the original. Honestly I'm not certain. But it's a book cover designed to prevent the actual original book cover from being damaged which is an unexpected bonus. Not many sellers take that extra step so it's much appreciated!

Amazing story from a true hero

Luttrell tells a very compelling story that sheds light on the true valor and courage of NAVY SEALs, especially those involved in his amazing survival story. The heroism of his fellow SEALs and himself will never be forgotten and I recommend this book to all.

  • Lone Survivor

I learned about this book when the author, Marcus Luttrell, USN SEAL, was interviewed by Laura Ingram (sp?), a "right wing" radio talk show host. Luttrell was such a good interview, and so obviously still struggling with the emotional aftermath of the titular mission, that I decided to gamble the cost of a copy of the book on eBay (plus shipping) to show my support. I was not disappointed. Luttrell and his co-author articulate in vivid terms what being a SEAL means to him. They concentrate on the rigors (to put it mildly) of SEAL training, and then on his experiences on the titular mission. These are obviously the parts of the total story that mean the most to him. However, he also makes it clear that he -- and perhaps many other SEALs as well -- started training to become a SEAL years ...

  • A Learning Experience

I've heard some of the tale of the author's experience on his last mission so I was motivated to get "the rest of the story" and read the book myself. It was an interesting read throughout though, If you have military experience as I have, the pages about his boot camp training could be skimmed. The majority of the book deals with the actual mission during which the author became the "Lone Survivor" and taught me a great deal about the Afghan society; at least the part he came in contact with as well as how Seals operate in the field. There was one aspect that saddened me. My military experience taught me that no matter what service one is in, it is not a democracy. May I offer one bit of advice, whether you decide to read the book or not: Understand that officers are paid to make ...

  • TRUE STORY OF TRUE HEROS

This book is about a true hero defending our freedom in situations that is inconceivable to the average citizen. A true story of bravery and honor. I had the priviledge of meeting Marcus Luttrell and I can tell you he is an amazing person and soldier. When I said to him its an honor to meet you he insisted it was an honor for him to meet me and couldn't thank me enough for coming out to meet him. His stories were so moving that it left me with true respect for our soldiers and the sacrifices they make on a regular basis for our country. So reading some of the other reviews ebay members left like "a little boring in the beginning" and "Gave the book to my husband because he likes espionage and war books. He said it was OK but not a great book. Bought it because it was about a young man ...

  • Great Book

This is one of the greatest purchases of a book I have ever made. I loved the book immensely. It is well written, inspiring, makes me proud to be an American and proud of our fighting men and women! A book of valor, uncommon courage, decision making, and character. The decision NOT to kill the shepherds was virtual suicide but was the right thing to do, just wrong for the SEALs. I love to read how character overcomes personal preservation, and this book tells it for real. Highly recommended for anyone who dares to see what it is really like to be an American hero. One lives, many die, but all were heros in my eyes. Language is a little vulgar at times, but such is life.
