      Deserves its best picture Oscar

This is one of the best pictures ever made. It manipulates the viewer into thinking it's a star-crossed romance between rich girl Angela (Elizabeth Taylor) and factory worker George (Montgomery Clift). They are so attractive and so much in love...but wait, George has a pregnant girlfriend. It takes two to tango, so it's not entirely George's fault, but neither is he an innocent victim, even though the film keeps showing George's anguish as he contemplates this immovable road block on his path to wedded bliss with Angela. Even if he could bring himself to give up Angela, marriage to fellow factory worker Alice would mean they'd both lose their jobs, because it's forbidden for factory workers to fraternize. We feel George's pain. When he comes up with a solution, It even seems logical. But ...

    • Most critical review

Read the book instead (American Tragedy, Theordore Drieser)

This movie is a very poor rendition of a classic American novel. It begins half-way through the book, so that the whole social commentary through early character development is lost. The movie is mostly about how pretty Taylor and Clift are, and very little about the commentary on social classes in the early 20th century that is the focus of the novel. The movie is trite. The book that it is based on is fascinating.

    • A Place in the Sun

The movie has fine early performances with Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift. The picture quality on the DVD transfer is not stellar but reasonably good in black and white.
