Lovely, but see the film before you read the book
If you have not read the book, this is a lovely film. It covers the main plot line well, beautifully filmed and with wonderful performances from the main characters, particularly Rufus Sewell as Giles and the very affecting character of Marty. It's not a film for those who want fast-paced action. It is, as is the book, a tale of quiet people living their lives quietly, but with all the passion and heartache of their lives kept within. However, once you have read the book, the film becomes unsatisfactory. Inevitably, due to constraints of time, characters are left out and scenes shortened or erradicated. Seeing this again after finishing the book, I found it too episodic, the narrative did not flow well and some of the motivations for characters actions were left unexplained - most ... If you have not read the book, this is a lovely film. Good version of the novel.
Although much abridged from the Hardy novel this is still a charming and affecting version. Beautifully filmed and all actors fitting the roles well especially Emily Woof who brings a quiet vulnerability to the role of the winsome Grace.
