Improbably Saving Rare Horses During World War II
While not entirely historically accurate, this older Disney DVD portrays what the more recent book, "The Perfect Horse," by E. Letts researches in great detail about the Nazi desire to breed the perfect Aryan horse. Her best selling book describes the risky efforts to save exquisite Arabians and Lipizzaner from starvation, from being eaten by the starving Russian army, or bombed out of existance during WWII. Disney downplays the violence of war to make this a family friendly movie suitable for all except maybe the youngest children. This is an important, but relatively unknown episode of WWII, in which supposed enemies, but actual horse lovers, risk so much to save these rare, beloved horses. In the movie, the recently mechanized US Army Cavalry makes a last minute raid to save these horses and get some of them shipped to the USA. Who can resist watching the Lipizzaner perform at the Spanish Riding School? Not me! Recommended.
