Simoun is one of the last bastions of obscure, perfect Animes along with Monster, Noir, Serial Experiments Lain, Black Lagoon, Land of the Lustrous, Shinsekai Yori, and Psycho Pass. It’s premise is essentially Gundam with a romantic twist dealing with gender identity, conforming obligations to society, societal gender rules, conflicts of romantic consent, and understanding and accepting tragic loss. It is multi-emotional rollercoaster of a series that uses its lesbian roots in a non-pandering way, treating the viewer with much more social maturity. Simoun is complicated and delves deep into its mythos without explaining a lot at once. While its art is beautiful, it often overshadows the vast intellect the series boasts and may take some time to get used to. It never feels like an anime, conventionally speaking. It feels more like an HBO drama. This is what elevates it and the aforementioned series higher and allows new grounds to be broken. Simoun is a true masterpiece all the way through that will have you wondering why it hasn’t been more well known. As of now, Hulu has been the only streaming service to recognize Simoun at all and has since been dropped from its roster. This complete collection is more than worth it for any fan of mature anime and the price is unbeatable. Please consider this gem before other series on Crunchyroll or Funimation distract you. You won’t be disappointed.Read full review
