About this product

Product Information

Between Elvis Presley and the Beatles, folk music enjoyed a brief popularity among young Americans. Heard in coffee shops and on college campuses, acts like Judy Collins, the Brothers Four, and Jimmie Rodgers were leaders in the genre. Hosted by Jack Linkletter, the 1963 television series HOOTENANNY showcased all the greats in folk, not to mention several comedians, jazz musicians, and gospel artists as well. Gathered in this collection are the show's best moments, compiled from footage once thought to be gone forever. The set contains over 80 tracks performed by artists including the Journeymen, Leon Bibb, Eddy Arnold, and many more.

  • just see the above

lots of fun if you remember the old tv series. very low-resolution, but that's cause the masters were low-res. to list it as "jazz, gospel is very misleading". mostly folk artists of the early 60's, w/a little jazz and gospel.

  • Best of Hootenanny,, 3 Disk Set.

The Sound Quality,, is Not up to par,, but do-able. The laughs of the 3rd Disk, of Jackie Vernon, are so Very funny,,, and the overall sound,,, is good enough. I have had better, sound quality, on the Triny Lopez, on I have had a hammer, from DVD's, from PBS, though. Sincerely, Steve Hansen

  • Great music, great performers

After watching the PBS folk special I really got interested in folk music from the 1960s. This video is great as it also includes comics and some short tours of the colleges where the concerts took place. I really liked revisiting the “old” times.

  • Great memories, captures the feel of the era

If you are a fan of 1960's folk music, you will love these DVD's. All the great performers and groups are there, performing before live college audiences. The original shows were well produced, with great camera works, wonderful reaction shots of the audience, and more. The production on these DVD's is outstanding too. It is great to be able to see and hear the groups that meant so much to us back in the day. You can still feel the energy and enthusiasm and idealism and optimism of that era. If you love 1960's folk music, if you are nostalgic about the era, or if you are too young to remember and want to get a look at what your parents enjoyed - and what they might have looked like - buy this program right now.
