This old fellow does the job for me. I use it cruising to the nearby islands and back home, the only thing that dissapointed me was it's inability to load more the one chart at the time. The LA area is divided in TWO charts so when I go north of Long Beach I have to connect the unit to the computer and load one, and back to the other one when I go south. Other than that is a solid piece of equipment, fast and made for water use. Not fancy but reliable.
Extremely user friendly handheld GPS. The basemap is limited, but downloading from MapSend DVD gives you much more detailed streets, POI, and other information. This was my first handheld GPS which I purchased many years ago. Still use it hunting, and fishing. Very reliable, and durable.

This used GPS replaced my old one, which had broke. I was so used to my old one, that I wanted the same one again, which is very practical and easy to use.

The Magellan Meridian is an EXCELLENT GPS for the Marine (or any other outdoor) Navigator, 14 hour battery life on common AA cells, pre-loaded Navaids for all North America and SD slot to load detail maps make it outstanding value, add, customizable nav. screens with LARGE FONTS and user friendly interface and you can see why it is so popular, The ONLY issue this unit has is with the lower battery connector and I have a modification to fix it (it randomly fails to power on)
The unit works great (when it works). I had four of them. They come loaded with all the basic navigation buoys throughout hte US. That itself may be worthwile. However, it breaks very easily and used ones are simply not reliable. Although I considered going for a fifth, I'll just switch brands and buy another unit altogether. The features are excellent, but the device is very prone to breaking and malfunctioning. I can't afford mistakes or shoddy equipment when I'm "out there".
Hey, this is a VERY NICE GPS. I am very pleased with the fact that it is in such good shape. Obviously you are a good Captain. Take care if your ship, and your ship will take care of you. I plan on using this unit as soon as the lakes freeze. I love to ice-fish, and with any luck will get out on the lake in a boat, mark some good structure and then come back when the lakes freeze, hopefully by mid November. I hope the GPS unit doesn't have too much trouble with the change from Florida to Nebraska. Thanks, and take care... brad
Very capable unit. A shame Magellan stopped making them. Mine has functioned flawlessly for several years in an outside holder on my sailboat bulkhead, navigating in the San Juan islands and up the British Columbia coast. Rain and splashed water doesn't harm it. The accessory data & power cable is a 'must' for extended use. These older Magellan units are a great bargain.
It's still the best basic handheld GPS around, for its easy intuitive user interface. It looks good, feels good, and is rugged and waterproof. But the key word here is 'basic'. There are no good maps available for it, and there never were. There's a basemap on it, which is way too coarse to navigate with. Mapsend maps are available, but the detail and coverage are nowhere near in place on them either. The greedy manufacturer kept the map software proprietary, refusing to allow the free NOAA charts onto these GPSs. With that he ruined a good product.
mine worked well-used it to sail from honolulu to kona side of the big island-about 180 miles of ocean and some very tricky channel crossings. I had to figure out how mine operated as it came with out owners manuel. It is easy to read and fairly user friendly. Great choice when compared to the other hand held units currently available-good luck and happy sailing
I am a fan of older Magellans, so when I had the opportunity to pick this one up, I jumped on it. The price was good, but a couple of cosmetic flaws with the unit help explain the price. Despite the cosmetic flaws, the unit operates perfectly. I updated the software/firmware and installed Topo Maps since I am in Central Illinois. Works just like my Platinum. Screen conrast is good and this GPS is a nice addition to my collection. Now if I could just find the "green" Sportrak GPS case!
