The storyline is a clever modern slant on H.G. Wells's, The Time Machine where the hapless Gary Sparrow, played by Nicolas Lyndhurst, finds he can be transported back to the wartime forties. This series is supported by a team of well-cast characters though for me, Smart-Alec, Ron with an amusing line in verbal diarrhoea is the star of the show. Goodnight Sweetheart also manages to give an interesting insight into the austere wartime years and just about holds its own with old favourites such as, The Likely Lads, Bread and Rising Damp. (certainly for the first couple of Series) Perhaps my only niggle is that some of Gary's forties gear, especially his massive trilby hat, in which he looks distinctly uncomfortable, hardly suits his long gaunt features. It should also be said that his gabardine raincoat is not forties retro - this fashion came out in the fifties. Never-the-less these are minor points in an otherwise excellent sitcom. Highly Recommended. Ken Smith.Read full review
Great time travel series, wish it was back on tv with a new series, this dvd includes six episodes from the beginning which is always a good place to start! in which we see gary (nicholas lindhurst only fools and horses fame)travel back in time to the 1940's (world war 2)to see him fall in love with two women, one from the past and one in the present, if i were him i would settle for the one in the past! some good comedy moments in the series too, this was well worth the money and time to watch, well recommended.
A great classic show. I remember watching this show when it was first shown on tv, and i loved the idea of a {accidental} time traveller, having separate life's in two different times. Gary Sparrow {Nicolas Lynhurst} is able to travel from LONDON 1990 to WORLD WAR II LONDON 1940's. While this is all exciting for gary, he struggles to keep up with his double life in the 1940's and back home in 1990's. Very funny and interesting show, with lots of twist and turns, can't wait to add the rest of the series to my collection. Highly recommended show. Enjoy beks
