This was my fourth or fifth copy of this book. All the others I have given away in moments of over-generous enthusiasm. Maybe I will keep this one......Naaah! Annie Proulx is one of our very best American writers. Ace in the Hole is a tour de force: simple, beautifully crafted, funny, ironic....the full package. Ms. Proulx has the best ear for dialogue in modern literature. The success of "Brokeback Mountain" probably did her a disservice in the end. It was not even one of the better stories in her Wyoming stories collection. She captures a wonderful picture of her subects, mostly through her characters language. I don't know how she does it: DAT recorder? Notes? Amazing memory, skill and attention to detail? Naaah, that can't be it...... The story line involves a hapless ex-college student who takes on a job as a location scout for a pork-factory farming outfit. The plot unfolds in the Texas Flatlands......who cares? Annie Proulx could write about professional hockey and it would be magic. Just be warned: even second time through I actually laughed out loud while reading in public places, and got some very odd looks from my fellow citizens.....so I would possibly think twice about reading this book on airplanes, busses, etc.Read full review
My son was reading it; recommended it. A lot of travel through remote country. Could not keep up with it. A good book, I am sure, but I need a bit of romance thrown in, so far have not found any.
