The DMC-FZ20K has a 12x optical lens system that is equivalent to 36mm to 432mm in a 35mm film camera. It comprises 13 lenses in eight groups, including three aspherical lenses and boasts F2.8 brightness across the entire zoom range. Plus, the DMC-FZ20K also provides 4x digital zooming - combine that with the 12x optical zoom to get up to 48x zoom power for ultra-long-distance telephoto shots. Jitter from shaky hands is one of the main reasons why cameras produce blurry images. Everyone can't have hands of stone when taking pictures - that's why Lumix cameras help solve the problem of unsteady hands with advanced MEGA Optical Image Stabilizer technology. The DMC-FZ20K has a built-in gyrosensor that detects any hand movement and relays a signal to a tiny microcomputer inside the camera, which instantly calculates the compensation needed. A linear motor then shifts the Optical Image Stabilizer lens as necessary to guide incoming light from the image straight to the CCD. You won't even notice it working - all you'll see are the outstanding results! The LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens on the DMC-FZ20K follows in the Leica tradition of excellence. Although it is small in size, it has a large, bright aperture, meeting Leica's stringent quality standards. A Leica multi-coating process applied to the lens helps to prevent the fogging caused by flare, and ghosts that can result from excessive light. Even enlarged images captured by the DMC-FZ20K are crisp and clear - right to the edges. Thanks to the high-performance Venus Engine II LSI, shutter release time lag is reduced to approximately 0.008 seconds and the shutter interval to only around 0.4 seconds. This gives the DMC-FZ20K a super-fast response that lets you snap off consecutive shots at 3 frames per second with full resolution. And the Unlimited Consecutive Shooting function allows unlimited consecutive shooting up to the capacity of the SD Memory Card in the camera - ideal for capturing fast-moving objects in high resolution. Like doing things for yourself? Then why not give the Auto Focus a rest and try taking some pictures with the DMC-FZ20K's Manual Focus feature. Simply flick the Focus button on the side of the lens to MF (Manual Focus) and you're ready to go. If you need to check the focus, Manual Focus Assist function enlarges the center part of the image in the viewfinder or LCD monitor by 3x for easy viewing. Want more control? The Manual Exposure Mode allows you to select the aperture and shutter speed of your choice. You can even see how much your setting differs from the setting the camera considers optimal with the Manual Exposure Assist function.

Old tech - but surprisingly hi-spec to learn on
This was my dirst DigiCam. After a decade of use I can tell you... The bad: The sensor is small size and low spec - so noise is a problem for dark images; just don't even try. Video is useless - just don't even try. The lens: only goes to a 35mm wideangle equivalent. Learn to fuse multiple images for landscapes in photoshop. The Viewfinder - is tiny - (but at least you have one for sunny days) The rear view screen is old tech - small and low resolution. The good [1] For contrasty images the dynamic range is small - so highlight clipping is a real issue. This is overall a bad thing - Fortunately there is a histogram function - which you need to use near all the time to get the best image quality out of this camera. [2] the "manual" focus control system - why didn't Panasonic carry this on with leter models? [3] it has a flash hotshoe - usually only seen on DSCRs or M4/3 high-end models [4] the lens distortion is very low and has an f2.8 aperture throughout the zoom - makes creative flash photography and creative control of depth of field possible [5] build quality - is more than excellent - it is a joy to hold. Overall - an FZ20 is a great camera to learn on if you can work around the problem list above and can't afford a later big sensor model.

Purchased because of the fantastic Leica Lens [6-72 f2.8], I was most impressed with this camera and particularly its light weight. [ It is approx 620gm as against typical DSLRs which are about double that weight at least] Really the only (neg)point to consider is the limitation of its ISO, things can get a bit grainy over 400, if you actually need that. I recently spent many hours wandering around with this camera and a lightweight tripod, and I have no hesitation in recommending it. Returning to the Leica lens, many fans of that marque either don't know or won't admit to the fact that since around 2005, Leica cameras and lenses actually originate from the Panasonic factory. Those punters really could have saved a lot of dosh had they done their homework!Purchased because of the fantastic Leica Lens [6-72 f2.8], I was most impressed with this camera and particularly its light weight.
