It's more a stand mount mic given its weight, but it sounds great-- drawback is the degradation of internal foam filter, but this can be cleaned out and substitute material installed...

This mic fits my needs perfectly. I was looking for a mic that captures a lot of midrange for that "vintage" sound. What I play and sing is pure Rockabilly. When using this mic, it alleviates a lot of EQ'ing on my end, as I try to roll off the hi's to emulate that old Sun Records sound. Once I throw some slapback echo on my vocals, then damn! I nail that Sun sound right on! As far as visual appeal... let's just say that everyone who sees it ooos and ahhs. I performed a side-by-side comparison with a SM57 I own (which is basically a 58 without a wind screen), and the 55 does place more emphasis on mids. The 57 more on the hi's, thus sounding modern. Reliability-wise, it seems to be built very sturdy. As a Test Engineer in Aerospace, I can say with confidence that this mic is capable of taking some abuse. And, it's made by Shure. Their mics are known for great reliability. I would have full confidence in this mic at any gig. Also, this mic is a bit on the heavy side. Use a straight stand. If you use a boom stand, be careful not to extend the boom or else it'll fall. But then again, a fall wouldn't hurt it. Overall, for the price, you get a lot. The visual appeal alone is worth the price. But as I said previously, if you want a modern sound, stick with a 58. If you want a vintage sound, the 55 will fit the bill.Read full review
This is the benchmark for Sports PA Announcing! I use this microphone over the SM58S time and again. It puts me in the zone for Football, Basketball, and Baseball Announcing each time I step up to the mic.

This is a very cool looking mic, in addition to the sound quality. The sound has a little more bottom, which is helpful for me. I really like it.
