This film covers the period between the wars, when Hitler's star was in the ascendant and Germany was, quietly, re-arming and preparing for war. At this time most British politicians were trustful of Hitler; only Churchill and a handful of others were aware of what was really happening and did their best to awaken the British to the reality. By 1940, of course, they were proved right... This is a well-researched and sensitive portrayal of a complex and sometimes difficult man and his relationships with those around him. Albert Finney and Vanessa Redgrave are perfectly cast as Winston and Clemmie Churchill. Ronnie Barker has a superb cameo role as Inches, the Churchills' butler and there is a splendid supporting cast. Highly recommended. Incidentally it compares very well with the very mannered 1974 film of the same name.Read full review

A Great film With Albert Finney as Winston Churchill and Vanessa Redgrave as his wife Clementine........both give a real fantastic performance, and its a different look into a time in Churchills life between the wars when after his disastrous time in goverment in the 1st World War. his influence as an Mp in parlement was lost...................but his predictions over Adolf Hitler were so true but were not taken seriously.................And a last chance to enjoy a fine performance from Ronnie Barker who with his performance in Open all hours and Porridge gave us all a lifetime off joy and laughter and who sadly died not long after the film was made.................Pick yourself up a used copy on dvd from Ebay and enjoy a great film ............as i did.

Finney gives a very good performance and captures the contradictions of the great man when he was a voice in the wildness in the 1930s. Vanessa Regrave is equally good. The film is well-plotted and always hold the interest. The film makes a valuable supplement to the more obvertly dramatic film 'The Darkest Hour'. 'The Gathering Storm', however, offers a more subtle portrait of Churchill and is stronly recommended.

Lovely to see the film again, great acting. Albert Finney does an excellent Churchill, surpassed by Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour). Lovely to see Ronnie Barker.

High quality production, script and cast - especially Albert Finney - filmed on location at Chartwell, covering the "wilderness years" of Britain's most interesting, complex and vital political leader.
