My opinion: I put off buying any game strictly made by THQ for a couple years due to the last THQ game that I couldn’t stand. That does not mean all THQ is bad, I have played games that were THQ joint efforts that were good. I must say this time THQ has come a long way and the game is pretty good but: Most shooters I play at medium to expert. This one I ended up on easy. At least in this level there are plenty of bullets; unfortunately that does not improve game fun. In fact it makes the game less fun but I got tired of doing the same thing over and over. This game has an issue that may confuse you. The main issue I experienced in the first few levels seams to glitch where the gas mask button fails to work as follows. In a heavy action moment, the mask button starts switching guns instead of masks. This makes you die than re-play the same spot over and over. The actual problem is the mask is or has failed due to cracks. So try to have a good gas mask before entering a tough spot. The story it’s self could be great. The presentation and reading of the story to you slowly in a Russian accent over and over becomes very cumbersome. A few levels up and there are more options to skip this dialogue. As for guns, get the AK, it works much better.Read full review
I see a lot of silent hill as in this could be a survival horror game, but it has a linear gameplay that plays a little like bioshock. It reminds me also a lot of STALKER for the PC and that was the main reason I bought it, because I figured, well I have the xbox why not play more games on it. The price on ebay is FAR below store pricing, at the time of this review used in store is 54.99 ebay was 30.00. The controls are very easy to handle if you have ever played any first person shooter before, sometimes you may have trouble knowing where to go because a few spots in the game lead to dead ends but to my knowledge it is linear based because I have only ever found one way to go. Some of the monsters / creatures are extremely hard to deal with and or kill but why play a game if it is not challenging? Overall, I love the game, the graphics and music get a 5 star rating from me, the gameplay is a little too linear for my liking, I would have personally liked a more fallout 3 based environment where you can go as you please, but that is just my personal opinion. If you are thinking about buying it, get it or wait til the price drops a bit and get it, only because it is still currently single player only and has no online play, to my current knowledge.Read full review
I really like the story and atmosphere. That alone is worth getting the game, though not for full price. It makes me want to read the book it is based off of so I can experience the storyline from a different angle. Those are really the main PROs for Metro 2033, but there are some CONs that keep it from being a 5 star game; 1) Very linear - Even in Metro Stations where there are people and shops, you are mostly regulated to a small area. Some may argue that this adds to the atmosphere and claustrophobia of the plot, but it doesn't help the gameplay. 2) Guns are weak - I saw this in other reviews and was prepared for it, but still it is true. Alot of the creatures and enemies take a lot of hits to go down, and in a game that uses bullets and ammo as currency it limits the fun of the gunplay. Also, areas are very dark and the guns are very inaccurate at times so I end up wasting a lot of bullets. 3) A couple frustrating parts - So far, the game hasn't been too tough, but there have been parts where checkpoints were far apart and I had to replay the same area a billion times. Turns out, it was because there was a glitch where there was an enemy soldier that couldn't die. I used a couple hundred bullets and multiple grenades at point blank range and he didn't mind it. Eventually I was able to walk passed him and continue. That problem hasn't happened again since. 4) "Chapters" are short - The game is broken up into chapters, which is okay since it's based on a book, however it seems they are very short. As soon as I get into a groove and start having fun with the game, here comes a load screen and more plot. I like the plot, and load screens aren't long, but I was getting into a groove and actually having some fun... Overall, it's a great game to experience, but the concept of bullets for currency and the overall gunplay keeps it from being an amazing experience. Still, I am enjoying it and look forward to reading the book for another take on the story.Read full review
Metro 2033 is a game that does so many things right, yet all most see of it are its faults. i liked the atmosphere of the stations, they have a lived in feel to them and the people are well-voiced and the background chatter is great. i also liked the having to recharge your batteries and change your filters, this adds to the tension of trying to sneak past a war zone. the currency is realistic, but it discouraged me from using the ammo because it was also the money. while the story is great, it just doesnt feel explained well enough, and the fact that my character is always following someone and that someone is always better equipped than i am is frustrating. you dont spend enough time in the stations to feel the whole atmosphere of the place, it just seems rushed. the dirty ammo is severely underpowered, when i shoot someone at close range with a shotgun, he should die, and a half a clip of assault rifle ammo should be more than enough to take down the lesser monsters. this should encourage sneaking, but once one enemy sees you, then all the other enemies in the area know your exact position as well. while i am listing some faults, i rather liked metro 2033. it is not a very good shooter, but if you are looking for an atmospheric game, this is it. i must remind some people that bioshock is not a great shooter either. it just seems like this game is a touch unfinishedRead full review
Metro 2033, first in the metro series so far; Is an awesome game, that combines the FPS, Survival Horror, and Stealth genera. The game also has very light RPG elements in the form of a moral system and two possible endings. The best aspect of this game is the atmosphere, set in post-apocalyptic Moscow a nuclear war has ravaged the surface forcing people to take shelter in the Metro system and make a life there. Between mutant abominations, political factions, the constant struggle to survive, and an ominous unknown threat. The game immerses you in the atmosphere of "no hope". You must fight to save humanity, and confront your greatest fears. The music score is really well done. The game tries to be as real as possible. It is not without flaws however, outdated graphics, and game mechanics problems are seen now and then but the overall performance is not affected. The console version controls are awkward and below average to say the least. Which is the single worst aspect of the game. Being the first game produced by 4A studios it lacks polishing, but the overall quality is little affected. The game is further polished in nthe second installment "Metro Last Light" and many of its problems are fixed as well e.g. controls mapping. Also recommended!!! Overall 8.5 to 9 on a 10 scale.Read full review
Metro 2033 is a very fun game if you like suspenseful, dark games, or if you're a fan of survival shooters. The story is interesting, and the world is very well done. The shooting aspect of the game is a little rough, but it doesn't detract from the fun of the game. It may actually improve the game, as you aren't a super soldier who can snap shoot enemies in the head while cartwheeling through the air. Overall this is a wonderful game, and worth buying if you get the chance.
Metro is one of the rare games that transcends genres and even mediums. It is a book told in game form and a really good one at that. Graphics are good without being amazing but they, along with the music, set the tone and setting PERFECTLY, giving you that full immersion that great games can occasionally do. It starts as a simple journey from Point A to Point B but becomes very interesting very quickly. The gameplay is good but not outstanding. I'd strongly recommend turning the look sensitivity up if you've played some other FPSs. The selection of weapons is relatively varied and in an interesting twist bullets ARE the common currency. High-Grade Military Rounds are your "money" to buy new guns, health-kits, granades, etc. This leads to an interesting dilemma where you have to weigh your priorities and playing style; you can use the high-grade bullets to take down a tough enemy or sneak past and save them for that sniper rifle or shotgun. I'd compare the combat-part to Half-Life 2 perhaps..... it's not as tight as COD or Halo but is sturdy enough to where you can get your headshots and precision sniper shots with a little practice. Another place where Metro has a close similarity to HL2 is the use of music and visuals to create an immersive experience.... as drawn-in to City 17 as I was with Half-Life 2, I was just as enthralled by the Russian Metro System. Metro really is a survival horror game moreso then Resident Evil 5 was..... you have to make your bullets count (you won't find enough to go spraying a room blindly with a machine gun) and hearing claws scraping and growls around the corner/in the air vents/behind a window are used to perfection to create a constant tension that builds throughout the whole game. Metro 2033 is an amazing game that I would recommend to anyone, even someone who doesn't like First-Person-Shooters. It can be a bit difficult but that adds to the hanging-on-a-thread feeling you have throughout the game. The story is very interesting and there are actually 2 separate endings based on some of your in-game decisions. If this has been a game that you've considered picking up or have been wavering on..... hesitate no more. Be warned, though, if you are looking for a Bulletstorm/Halo/Gears of War slugathon this might not be exactly what you are looking for. I'd describe this game as a book that just happens to be in game form (and yes, I'm aware that this game is based on a book..). I'd almost call it a work of art..... Regardless it is definitely worth the current price and I'd strongly recommend it, especially if you are a fan of the Half-Life or Bioshock Games.Read full review
Metro 2033 is by far one of the top 5 single player experiences I have ever had with a game. If you are into post apocalyptic, gas masks and shooting a rag tag SMG, then this is your kind of game. The game is dark and gritty like a normal Horror Shooter is suppose to be. The bullets are scarce which makes complete sense since it isn't just an action shooter. You are in the decaying ruins of Moscow, living in the Metro, scrapping together whatever you can find. Also the enemies don't take a full clip to kill. How do I know? I've played the game 6 times.
Fairly straight forward, but with some great twists for survival. The levels are beautifully made. A collector's item in a few years i would guess.

Post-apocalyptic world that you have to see to believe, if you can. You have a flashlight to guide you through a dark world of meaningless existence. Thumbs down on action since bullets are scarce and it takes a guns entire quantity of bullets to kill anything. Guns are nothing special, very little optics. Try again I say and next time maybe consider Fallout New Vegas recreate with an open world and a plot. Oh, and throw in some bullets and some light. Try not to over do the whole "this is original, honestly" thing too much. Skip this little beaut, if for no other reason, than cable TV which is much more interesting. Replay fallout 3, do you have all of the add-ons. There are 5. Get them all and forget about all of these "remake/ retry" games. Thank you.
