NotesOne of the pivotal talents in Jamaican music, Ranglin began as a guitarist with many of the island's post war jazz bands; he came to world attention in the '60s as a pioneer of the ska shuffle that launched Jamaican popular music. Below the Bassline includes Ranglin's takes on the Congo's "Congo Man," August Pablo's "King Tubby Meets the Rockers," Toots & the Maytals classic "54-46 (Was My Number)" and more. Collaborators include Ira Coleman (bass), Idris Muhammad (drums) and others and a guest appearance by Jamaican saxophonist Roland Alphonso.
Dimensional blend of blues noodling (Garcia - like picking scales) and roots reaggae…no need for vocals. An original blend of styles for reggae and blues fans alike
So much more than either jazzy guitar or reggae rhythms this is Mister Ranglin's best for me. It grooves, it soothes, and takes away the blues. if you need a mood, this is one CD everyone needs to complete their collection, I'm on my third copy of this fantastic selection.
