Night Gallery - Anthology Series Of The Unusual And Macabre
As a huge fan of anthology series and portmanteau horror films I was excited to see Rod Serling's follow up to the Twilight Zone. Alas Serling did not have the same level of controlling influence over the show as he would have liked and as a result the quality suffered, including far too many short and frivolous episodes. Overall the series is not of the highest quality but some individual story segments are terrific, kind of similar to buying an album which has a lot of filler material but has enough great songs to make it worthwhile. The show is significant for launching the career of Stephen Spielberg, and other notable directors include John Badham and Jeannot Schwarz. For what it's worth my favourite episodes of the first season include:- The Cemetery ( Roddy Mcdowall and Ossie ... A couple of episodes from season two and three are included as a bonus feature. Ultimately Night Gallery is an intriguing series that should have been better, but is a fascinating product of the early seventies of American television.
