Additional InformationIn the midst of World War II, a German U-boat crew is sent out to patrol the Atlantic and fire at Allied ships bringing supplies to England. The submarine also carries a press correspondent, there to report from the front lines of nautical warfare. Meanwhile, the crew's captain (Jurgen Prochnow û IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS, BEVERLY HILLS COP II) is becoming disillusioned with the Nazi regime and with war in general. What starts out as a routine mission is soon livened up beyond the crew's expectations when their boat's surprise attack on a convoy is thwarted by a fast-moving destroyer. Battered by depth charges, the crew must pull together to survive the attacks of their unseen enemy.<BR>Widely considered to be director Wolfgang Petersen's best film and one of the finest German films ever made, DAS BOOT is stunningly realistic in its portrayal of the cramped conditions aboard a German submarine. Based on a novel by Lothar G. Buchheim, it is a striking example of an intelligent antiwar film clothed in the guise of a military thriller.

  • U Boot fan

Brilliant film anyway but the directors cut just put the shine on the film. Although we are all used to the history of the u boat conflict this film adds the human element to the war. From personal knowledge it is also a fact that as the war went on conscription became the norm....... It must have been "hellish"

  • Vertually live on board a Nazis submarine.

I'm hooked on Das Boot because of the series shown by SkyUK. This is a good watch but I'm incredibly biased as I'm such a fan of viewing Das Boot TV series. The Film or TV series.I have watched the TV series over&over I've almost virtually lived aboard a submarine. The Film is more documentary than the TV series so one can't compare.Personally I like drama but I'm not being disrespectful to the Film Directors Cut of Das Boot.

  • You get what you pay for...

The 'narrative' in 'Das Boot' is really secondary to the intense claustrophobia of the setting. This may not be a prticularly enticing recommendation but may be likened to the 'symphonic' amosphere created by say, Tarkovski's movies or even maybe to the anti-narratives of Peter Greenaway's extravagances, though again, the gritty-sweaty confines of Das Boot could hardly make a starker contrast. I suspect that anyone ordering this TV series is unlikely to be unfamiliar with its grim verité atmosphere.

  • Brilliant film

This was recommended on Twitter in response to the question "what is the best subtitled film you've ever seen?" Many of the replies included this German film about WW2. It probably has been one of the best WW2 we've ever seen.

  • STILL not as good as the original TV broadcast

It seems to be impossible to get a DVD version of this in the original German with FULL sub-titles, as it was originally broadcast on the TV. This is a German Language version with sub-titles but more often than not there are long tranches of German dialogue with no sub-titles at all, which is hugely irritating if one does not understand German oneself. Still, it is preferable to the English dubbed version, which is appalling. It is probably the best "anti-war" film I have ever seen, although it does not try to be such a thing. One becomes so engrossed in the personalities of the German u-boat crew that the ending is utterly shocking. Fantastically realistic and gritty and superbly acted all round.

  • Possibly the best submarine film of all time.

The German-language with subtitles version of Das Boot is always the best, I hate films dubbed into another language. There are slight differences in the subtitles between this version and the original VHS version, probably because of 'political correctness', another thing I hate. Other than that, it remains an outstanding production.

  • DVD recording of an utterly brilliant film that can be watched time and time again.

It's a DVD, so not a lot to say about the actual product, other than it works fine and the quality is very good. Subtitles are in English, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Icelandic and Turkish.

  • Gripping drama

Love this DVD. Just have see if I can work out how to put it into German mode with English subtitles. Captivates the viewer from the word "go". A classic of modern cinema.

  • Great WW2 Film

Das Boot and Saving Private Ryan are my two favourite two WW2 films, each from a different perspective. Das Boot is from the German side of WW2 in a U-Boat, which creates incredibly tense claustrophobic scenes. It shows the slow distrust the older officers are having about the war, while the new crew believe in the Nazi ideology. Posted very quickly, works fine and a great film.
