About this product

Product Information

Perched in the middle of Virginia City, Nevada, is a little-known piece of '60s counterculture history. Though the hippie movement is acknowledged to have been born in San Francisco, the seeds of musical experimentation, free love, and artistic expression germinated in the Red Dog Saloon, where bands like The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and The Charlatans played long before they were famous. The psychedelic era was ushered in at this nightspot, where the scene was somewhat surreal, as the musicians carried guns, the kitchen served gourmet French meals to rowdy customers, and the air was full of creativity and revolution. Filmmaker Mary Works pieces together the story using interviews with key members of the community, music, archival footage, photos, and poster art. A sense of the excitement of the times is palpable, while an interesting look at what each person went on to do is also afforded.

  • A long fun trip

If I had to come up with a criticism of this video, it would only be that it was a little too long for anyone who isn't seriously interested in the history of the whole psychedelic San Francisco 60s music scene. If however like myself, you have a love for that magical time rock music history when posters and mind-expansion were changing the cultural landscape like a ten point earthquake, you will love this video. It's more than just a documentary on an obscure bar, it's weekend visit with some of the psychedelic sound's founders and a visual/audio flashback you will not want to miss. Dig it!

  • Ok documentary

This is a ok documentary about the venue featuring a lot about an ok band I had never heard of. I thought it would be more of a concert video featuring Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, and the Jefferson Airplane. I was mostly disappointed

  • Where it all began

Awesome historical dvd about the Red Dog Saloon! To see the Charlatans playing, as they were the house band but there is no other video of them playing in existence. So many bands from the psych jam band era played there before they became famous. Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and many other groups. An era in music history that I grew up in👍👏
