About this product

Product Information

Down Periscope is a 1996 20th Century Fox comedy movie, produced by Robert Lawrence and directed by David S. Ward. Starring Kelsey Grammer, Lauren Holly and Rob Schneider and notable co-stars including Bruce Dern, Harry Dean Stanton, William H. Macy, and Rip Torn. In this screwball comedy, John Dodge (Grammer) is not the typical officer, but a brilliant and unorthodox superior who has always wanted to command a nuclear submarine. His skills are tested when he is given an older submarine with a misfit crew and then tagged as the 'enemy' in a war game. With a total run time of 92 minutes, this is a quick film to see that has guaranteed laugh out loud moments.

    Ok Plot... Flawed Execution

This is Kelsey's first of at least two feature films (the other being "The Real Howard Spitz," on VHS or PAL format DVD import). A clever naval officer executes a naval war game in his typical unorthodox way. Some of the ideas he demonstrates does (at least to this writer) indicate that there is at least some familiarity with watercraft manuvering. Not a great comedy film but not overly silly either. It almost reminds me of a variation of the movie theme of "Operation Petticoat" without the Class or the serious minded captain. There is profanity. Almost immediately the "F" word is used. Repeated references to a certain part of the main male character's anatomy being tattooed is necessary because ? Handled differently this could have really helped Kelsey's potential movie career. Given a ...

  • Rev's thots...

This is a movie I turn to when I need a good laugh. It pokes fun at our "isms" and lets us laugh at ourselves and not take ourselves so seriously. Tending to the serious side, always looking for meaning, this is a good anecdote for me. Be prepared to release lots of pent up intensity.
