Synopsis
Captain Bluebear tells the story of his first 13-1/2 lives spent on the mysterious continent of Zamonia, where intelligence is an infectious disease, water flows uphill, and dangers lie in wait for him around every corner., "A bluebear has twenty-seven lives. I shall recount thirteen and a half of them in this book but keep quiet about the rest," says the narrator of Walter Moers's epic adventure. "What about the Minipirates? What about the Hobgoblins, the Spiderwitch, the Babbling Billows, the Troglotroll, the Mountain Maggot...Mine is a tale of mortal danger and eternal love, of hair's breadth, last-minute escapes." Welcome to the fantastic world of Zamonia, populated by all manner of extraordinary characters. It's a land of imaginative lunacy and supreme adventure, wicked satire and epic fantasy, all mixed together, turned on its head, and lavishly illustrated by the author., The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear is playful enough for young adult readers, yet as intricate and engaging as any work of literary fiction; it has the plot of a novel and the spontaneity and humor of a vintage comic book., Welcome to the fantastic world of Zamonia, populated by all manner of extraordinary characters. This is book one of the series the Washington Post called "equal parts J. K. Rowling, Douglas Adams, and Shel Silverstein." • Riveting adventure story

700 pages detailing 13 very different adventures of the titular character. It is smart, witty and adorable. I have read and listened to the original German version, which naturally carries deeper meanings with names and certain descriptions, but this English translation is very close. I am reading it to my 7 year old. She is a big fan of Harry Potter and finds this equally as enjoyable. Like Harry Potter, prepare to have a dictionary on hand and a wild imagination. I would recommend this for ages 7 and up to read to your child and at least 12 and up to read on their own.
