Bought this to try making my own OpenWrt 19 router. Was in great condition and the installation of OpenWrt (using wires and tape because my son took all my solder to Uni :) method worked first time. Lovely little project - if you do it too, remember that routing is done in software - no hardware acceleration after the move to OpenWrt. I wasn’t ready for the slow down, but love the flexibility. I have set my HH5A up with three external network options: 1. Ethernet routing, along with 2. Wireless Ethernet cdc-ether (wwan) and 3. Wireless MBIM cellular working - the latter two work over the over the HH5A's USB port.Bought this to try making my own OpenWrt 19 router. OpenWRT
I find the LuCI OpenWRT web interface to be clunky and unintuitive. It is a bit technical than what I am used to which I found required some background reading and research just to get the hub to create a PPP session with my ISP John Lewis. It is a lot more technical than any shop bought WiFi Router you can buy which is not a good thing in my opinion. However the WiFi is excellent on this hub it gives me a WiFi signal in parts of the house where there was no signal with other WiFi Routers. I found that buying this service is the cheapest and easiest way of getting a powerful router.I find the LuCI OpenWRT web interface to be clunky and unintuitive. LEDE router works as expected :-)
Delivery was quicker than expected (a few days) and the router looks brand new. I could easily get my PC to talk to the router but it took some googling to find out why I couldn't get the router to talk to my ISP (TalkTalk). [something to do with LEDE automatically enabling an ATM bridge for pppoe, which is not required for pppoa but it left it configured and caused problems connecting to my ISP] The router has been working for 6 days now without any problemsDelivery was quicker than expected (a few days) and the router looks brand new. Unlock the hidden potential in your old PlusNet or BT Router
For a small amount of money you can get access to the feature-set and performance of a much more expensive router that is hidden below the surface of the stock one. Changing the software image is somewhat tricky and involves accessing a couple of tiny unmade connections on the router main "board" - I'm reasonably technical but I'm happy for someone else to do that job, which is what this *service* (as you need to mail in a donor router) is all about. I wanted to create additional networks for my devices around the house (Smart TV's, Alexa etc) and keep them away from the laptops and tablets but I couldn't do that with the software on the ISP provided router and didn't want to spend a fortune on a hardware upgrade. After the software upgrade, I now have proper VLANs, Firewall Zones and I ... This new software image is OpenWRT/LEDE based on Linux. It has a very good feature-rich User interface but it doesn't have a "clueless mode" like some ISP routers so be prepared to do a little bit of reading (and capture your current ID and password that you use to log onto the ISP network) before you plug it in. I had to create a new "VLAN 101" sub-interface (look it up) on the dsl connection and add my UserID & Password - TBH there wasn't much more to it than that but I intend to explore more features over time. Router is rock solid @ 40Mb/sec with multiple 4K Netflix & iPlayer streams. I also get far more info & stats about my connection and can log everything. Highly recommended - but not for the absolute technophobe.

On it's own, the HomeHub 5 is a good router, it's the same board and bits they throw in the PlusNet Hub One unit. Exactly the same! The "upgrade" is where LEDE, OpenWRT and LuCI come in. The upgrade itself is a hard job, involves some precision soldering and well, I even tried it myself and I consider myself very good with electronics, but this was a little too beyond me. So, the alternative? Buy one on Ebay. So, what do you get? Well, a router that's been set onto Beast-Mode from the get go. It's not plug n play, so if you are in anyway nervous about router settings, isps and their respective connections then either read up or walk away. That said, once you have it hooked up to your ISP ... Where do we start? If you are reading this thinking about wireless freedom, then read on. If you are a super geek, want freedom from your stock router then get one of these. Not for the nervous or non geeky in my opinion, this is a real toy.
