    Worth the Effort, But Still a Miss

    This is hard for me. We don't have enough Westerns. As an art form, it died decades ago. So, I am reluctant to write anything that discourages producers from making more Westerns. But, I have to be honest, this movie could have been more. I bought it mostly for the cinematography, but the cinematography was not exceptional. Christian Bale's character strains credulity, and Bale, himself, is okay here, but just okay. Wes Studi is not on screen enough. The female lead is wasted, and her character also strains credulity. It's a slow move, and there is some boredom. This would have been an excellent Made-for-TV movie spread out over four hours. I am glad this film was made, but it did not hold my attention.

    More twists than a bag of pretzels in a hurricane..!

    The geographic backdrop of this movie depicting the early days in the Southwestern US is absolutely amazing as that was what caught my attention at first. The message of conflicts among the races between the settlers, Calvery and Native Americans conveys similar struggles decades later w/many different races of today. I felt the peaks and valleys of the emotional rollercoaster throughout from the very beginning all the way to the surprise ending in final few frames of the last shot. I definitely would say this movie was a sleeper and truly deserved much more fanfare. Although, there are very violent scenes that should draw caution to young eyes for sure, the overall acting was superb.
