        Great bedtime reading

Thanks to Richard Osman, I’ve been introduced to a new genre of Crime story: “Cosy Crime”. More Miss Marple than Rebus, and written with style and wit. There is a murder, but it’s the four elderly protagonists who try to solve it who spark my interest. We get to know them gradually, over many chapters, and though this could never be called a page-turner, the brilliant observation of old people and their foibles is wonderfully entertaining. This is what I’d call Slow Fiction, written in a thoroughly modern style, and though you have to reread paragraphs every now and end to keep up with some clumsy changes of viewpoint, it’s worth the effort. I’m looking forward to the next book, “ The Bullet that Missed”; the title alone ia delicious!

      • Most critical review

        Tedious Mundane Club.

I've always enjoyed watching Richard Osman on TV. An intelligent and witty man, i was sure those qualities would transfer across to his novel. I'm afraid i was wrong. There isn't one single character that is memorable or realistic. The writing style of Mr Osman is rather flat and fails to grab the interest of this reader. I kept with it to the end in the hope it would improve. It didn't. I hear Mr Osman will be writing at least 2 more TMC's ? I won't be reading.

      • Wide spectrum of audience.

Well above reading age 14 year old loves it, who has since seen one of his teacher's and a friend's mum brandishing a copy, so must cover a wide spectrum of reader. Book in great condition and service was excellent as always - would recommend.

      • A Very funny OAP mystery

When I began I had no idea who the author was or expectations of how exceptionally funny and refreshing this book would be. I wasn’t sure at first but after the first few pages I was laughing out loud and quickly realised what a treasure it is . Very British, sharp and clever and not in the least patronising towards us older folk. I have recommended to many of my friends & given two copies away

      • Humour a bit cloying and forced. Not my bag!

Really, it's personal taste! I did not find it funny, and although it's supposed to be a "cosy murder mystery," It seemed to me the author forced himself to be amusing. But it is highly rated by others, so hey - just my opinion!
