About this product

Product Information

In this unique coming-of-age anime, Alexandre Dumass classic novel is re-angled and told not from the point of view of the wealthy, self-made Count of Monte Cristo, but of a nave, teenaged Albert de Morcerf. The story begins with Albert and the Counts meeting on the moon colony Luna, and, with viewers sympathies now skewed toward Albert (and his wise friend, Le Baron Franz dEpinay), the machinations of the dark, mysterious Count are slowly made clear through flashbacks. This collection includes all 24 episodes of the series.

  • Entrancing, beautiful, and faithful version of The Count of Monte Cristo.

This is the Geneon set of DVDs. Much superior to the Gonzo set. Important to know up front. (Unless you want all the compulsory advertising and relatively poor graphic values of the Gonzo set.) I've read and re read the full Count of Monte Cristo. And watched every filmed version I could find. I've watched this several times. I prefer the Japanese language option, and have watched it with and without English subtitles. Despite translating the text to anime themes, Japanese culture, and interplanetary space in a future time, this anime telling is most true to the novel's concerns and details, if not narrative structure. It is visually innovative and astoundingly beautiful, literally drawing on a wide range of Western and Japanese art history, including the Japanese wood block printing tradition. Seriously, it is beautiful and entrancing. Enjoy!
