Star Darren McGavin brought to life one of detective fiction's most memorable characters with his portrayal of private eye Mike Hammer, in the once-controversial series MICKEY SPILLANE'S MIKE HAMMER. Each week found Hammer plowing his way through a seemingly impenetrable web of deceptions and double-crosses, with trademarks including a never-ending string of sardonic wisecracks and the most brutal violence ever seen on television at that time - so brutal that <I>Variety</I> termed the program "a mixture of blood, violence and sex." The series initially ran from 1957 through 1959, and included 78 episodes, all of which appear in this box set as they originally aired.

    Best of its kind..

    I only recently discovered this series, playing on one of the antenna channels. Been a long time fan of 'Kolchak', never knew about Hammer. Any fan of the noir genre should have this. Darren McGavin at his cool best!

    Great old time TV series and a must for Darren McGavin fans.

    Great old series. Darren McGavin does an excellent job playing Hammer. Most of the series has good story lines and Darren McGavin blends in humor very well reflecting the period that the series was made. Some of the fight sequences can be hokey but it adds to the enjoyment level. Back when Television was just getting rolling, its a good look at life and morality in the fifties. If you like old time TV series, this is worth considering collecting. If you are a Darren McGavin fan, a must have.

    Darren McGavin as Mike Hammer - a hard to find TV series of late 1950s

    Rare, interesting TV series of a different era, 1958. I remember Darren McGavin better in that great 1983 movie, A Christmas Story about the little boy wanting a BB gun for Xmas and as Kolchak in the mid-70s The Night Stalker where his "comic" touch showed in both. Was surprised he did this. Typical quick TV episodes, as interesting for their brevity as for the Mickey Spillane, Mike Hammer mysteries they are based on. Spillane was quite a character, even played Mike Hammer in the movies at least once. He sold many books.

    One of the BEST versions of MIKE HAMMER!

    Even better than I was hoping. Can't stop watching! As a Hammer fan since 1983, McGavin has proven one of the TOP TWO Hammers ever (along with Biff Elliot-- no kidding). I got a good deal on a used set... 2 days after it arrived, I found a NEW set for $20 less on a specialty site, but decided, NOOO, I'm not sending this one back! (heh) Skip Martin's "Riff Blues" is one of the BEST theme songs of any TV show I've ever seen.

    Great 50's TV series

    Takes me back to my childhood. It was my favorite show then and I have to say it is as good as I remebered it to be. You can catch in some episodes stars such as a very young Angie Dickenson. I am very glad I purchased the set. Great picture transfer. crystal clear.
