    Easy to use, good features

The product was a gift for my parents, they learnt to use the device quite fast. It is feature-rich, we had no problems while connecting several smartphones and computers, data transfer through wifi is good (although you need a fast router to fully use it without any issues). No need to change to certain channel on the TV, if content is being tranferred to the device, the (now not quite new, not so smart Philips) TV automatically changes to the HDMI channel, the device is connected.

  • Most critical review

great for casting video from apps, terrible for casting photos

Chromecast works very well from android mobiles for streaming video (HD) from apps enabled for casting. But if you wan to cast your photos from your phone, it is awful, generating low resolution pixelated images. This is because chomecast mirror your phone screen image and unless you have full HD on your screen or better, then i creates a horrible low res mess on your HD and 4K big screen. So, its great for casting HD movies from cast-enabled apps like netflix, player, more etc, but hopeless for casting your own videos and pictures. Shame really.

  • Easy to set up, easy to use. Watch your content wherever you want.

It does what it says on the tin: streams a range of media onto any TV. Great for when travelling (hotels, friends, parent's house). Fire up Netflix, Hoopla, Youtube, BBC iPlayer etc on your phone or laptop and then you have the option to cast to the TV. Quality of picture is pretty good, even on a less-than-great broadband connection. What's particularly great with this Google device, compared to the cheap Chinese Miracast knock-offs, is that once the streaming is taken over by the dongle, you can then browse other things on your phone, or let it sleep. It hands off the streaming from your mobile device or laptop to the Chromecast.

  • How do they do it?

I enjoy rugby union but as an EE customer I had no access to live matches on the tv. Now that it is possible to cast the BT Sport app I jumped at getting Chromecast. I have Chromecast audio so was pretty confident that it should work well enough. I’m no tekkie but set up was really straight forward and it’s great to be able to watch some live rugby. Now that I have a smart tv I don’t need to cast other apps but it works equally well with Netflix, YouTube and All4. It’s unobtrusive and I reckon it’s a pretty clever bit of kit for not a lot of money. I do a fair amount of travelling and often stay in B&Bs and I now take the Chromecast to be able to have access to Netflix etc. Occasionally I need to reset (not set up, just re-establish connection between my phone and Chromecast) but this ...

  • Cheaply Smarten Up Your TV

An easy and affordable way to convert a TV with a USB port into a wireless TV so that you can easily share images & videos from your smart phone / laptop. It also makes it easier to use online TV players like iPlayer as you can use your smart phone / laptop keyboard to navigate (rather than the TV's cumbersome keyboard on the screen / remote).
