    Michael Gambon brings Maigret to life

    This is one of the best detective series ever. Maigret is a fictional icon who has been portrayed by various talented actors. But to me, Gambon brings the French detective to life. Frequently opposed by his superior officers, Maigret's experience and intuition carry the day and lead to justice being served, all in a cloud of contemplative pipe smoke. The stories by Simenon are beautifully plotted and puzzling. But Maigret works through the obstacles to a satisfactory conclusion. They're just great fun to watch.

    The writing on Maigret is great, the production values are excellent and the cast is wonderful. The only negative is there were too few episodes made – just 12. I highly recommend this series.

    Civilized Detective

    Series is not action-packed or with "aha" moments. Maigret is more slow moving but the characters are fascinating. Rather amusing watching Brits be French--while retaining their Britishness, but with quite good French pronunciations of names and places.
