Mr. Roarke (Ricardo Montalban) operates an exclusive island resort with the help of his dwarf assistant, Tattoo (Herve Villechaize). This resort is unlike any other, however, in that each visitor is treated to the realization of his or her wildest fantasies. The suave, mysterious Roarke appears to possess the boundless capability to realize any dream, while his faithful servant wins people over with his charming smile, and his memorable line "De plane! De plane!" The episodes are comprised of two segments, each introducing a new guest and pet fantasy. In realizing their dreams, however, the guests often learn something about themselves, as well as the danger involved in actually getting what you've always wanted. In the first season of the 1978 show, a prince lives as a common man while two working class girls live the jet-setting life on the island. A woman with amnesia uses voodoo to regain her memory, a prostitute settles down, a man becomes the most irresistible guy in the world, and a comedian wishes for a simpler life. A Much Under Rated Series
The stories in Fantasy Island are engaging and entertaining, but may seem simplistic and rather outdated by today's standards. Overall, the writing for the episodes was excellent, and I'm surprised that some enterprising producers have not decided to revive a similar series in an updated format. The basic premise of Fantasy Island (fantasy realization) is ageless and appeals to all age groups. A super blast from the past!
I bought this first season for my girlfriend for her birthday, as we both had only vague memories of this show as kids but remembered thinking it was really cool. It hasn’t disappointed! It’s actually a bit scarier at times than expected, but still tame compared to today’s shows.
