About this product

Product Information

A Sunday Times Book of the Year Sunday Times Top 10 Bestseller British Summer Time Begins is about summer holidays of the mid-twentieth century and how they were spent, as recounted to Ysenda Maxtone-Graham in vividly remembered detail by people who were there. Through this prism, it paints a revealing portrait of twentieth-century Britain in summertime: how we were, how families functioned, what houses and gardens and streets were like, what journeys were like, and what people did all day in their free time. It explores their expectations, hopes, fears and habits, the rules or lack of rules under which they lived, their happiness and sadness, their sense of being treasured or neglected - all within living memory, from pre-war summers to the late 1970s. Ysenda takes us back to the long stretch of time from the last days of June till the early days of September - those months when the term-time self was cast off and you could become the person you really were, and you had (if you were lucky) enough hours in the endless succession of days to become good at the things that would later define your adulthood. The 'showpiece' part of the summer holidays was 'the summer holiday', when families took off to the seaside, or to grandparents' houses teeming with cousins, or on early package holidays to France or Spain, siblings wedged into the back of small cars, roof-racks clattering, mothers preparing picnics. British Summer Time Begins is as much about the long weeks either side of that holiday as the trip itself: the weeks when nothing much officially happened, boredom often lurked nearby, and you vanished for hours on end, nobody much knowing or even caring where you were. Could it be that those unscheduled days were actually the most important and formative of your life? From the author of the beloved Terms & Conditions, British Summer Time Begins is a delightful, nostalgic and joyous celebration of summers.

This is my second time buying from this seller and I would definitely place another order in the future. This time I ordered three books and everything went well. The books arrived in great condition, matching the description. As always they are very carefully wrapped. The prices are great and the communication is always very kind and clear.. responses very quickly. Highly recommend this seller.

This book arrived in good condition and as described and good was good value as were the other books I ordered. Unfortunately the packaging didn't survive Royal Mails handling and this was the only book I received of five I had ordered. I contacted WeBuyBooks and they have been brilliant in trying to resolve the issue of the missing books. They are replacing one that they still have in stock though unfortunately are unable to do so for the other three so are issuing a refund for these.

This book is exactly as described and in excellent condition. I'm really pleased with the quality and the price I paid which very low and exceptional value for money. The book was very well packaged and dispatched and delivered very quickly in just a couple of days. Excellent communication throughout with the seller. Very friendly, helpful and prompt response. I have bought from this seller a few times and everything has always met or exceeded my expectations.

I bought this book thinking it would be an ideal summer read for for my Wife and I as it looks as though it would appeal to most readers of a certain age. However, it isn’t aimed at the majority of us who had the usual, budget family holidays. Most of the content references the summer holidays of the middle-classes and toffs and has very little interest to those of us without access to a Scottish lodge! It is very well written(we read a lot of Ms.Maxtone Graham’s work in the Spectator) but it was a disappointment.

  • Reflections on 'the' school summer holidays of yesteryear

After reading great pre-publication reports about this book, I bought a copy as a birthday present for my wife. She was captivated by it from page 1, virtually pausing only to eat meals. It brought back many fond reminiscences and reminders of her childhood and early adulthood. I have yet to read the book fully but, from my random dips, it is clear that Ysenda Maxtone Graham has collated a wonderful collection of memories, many of which are chucklingly identical to my own experiences in the 1950 and early 60s.

  • Heard a shirt passage from this book on Radio 4 by chance 3 weeks ago and then saw it in the window of my local bookshop

Lovely condition. Looking forward to reading and going back in time to my school summer holiday

  • Nostalgic

Appeals to those of us who remember childhood in the fifties and sixties and will bring back nostalgic memories. Some of it will probably horrify modern parents!
