"From hilltop homes to seaside retreats, nature and design artfully intersect in these elegant, unpretentious spaces. Editor and author Daniel P. Synopsis
Elegant rusticity meets unpretentious luxury in the work of this award-winning architecture firm. Howard Backen, principal of the architecture firm Backen, Gillam & Kroeger, is at the center of a popular movement in home design that emphasizes elegant simplicity and embraces the rustic charm of natural materials. This volume, the first on his work and that of the firm, is an artful exploration of this aesthetic, featuring farmhouses in the Napa Valley, hilltop homes, seaside retreats, and lakeside hideaways. Throughout the work, a sense of intimacy, warmth, and informality pervades. Natural materials, such as wood, stone, and brick, form the foundations, walls, and ceilings of these subtly luxurious spaces, while nature itself plays a considered role that is at once complementary and also intricately conjoined with the work. Sensitive, alluring, and wonderfully resonant with the suggestion of invitation, the work of Backen, Gillam & Kroeger is both thrilling to the eye and restorative to the soul.

Very cool seller here! They accepted an offer I had on an item, and quickly too. The time it took the item to get to me was quick as well, a day before it was supposed to be there! Everything came as it was posted on here, as well as the price they were asking for it. Packaging was simple yet affective as well, not damaged at all! Amazing seller! 10/10!

The books came in excellent condition aka described and packaging was good. For books that came out in 1990 and look this good, is crazy. They are mint as is the jacket. Shipping was quick. The price for the books and shipping were also good. I had no communication with the seller. I didn't need too.

  • The book shows the value of simplicity and elegance in home design.

A spectacular book about some of the most amazing homes I have ever seen. I purchased it upon the photos of the cover alone and WOW the rest of the book is filled with designs and photos of some of the most expensive homes but well designed I have ever see. This is a book that will required deep thought and review of the work that this firm has done. I would love to have just one client that had both the desire, the funds and site for a home like the ones in this book. This firm makes a strong statement for the value of simplicity and elegance in the places you live. I am very glad I purchased this book.
