Owen Sheers is simply one of our best living poets. He ought to be Poet Laureate and has in the past been the Lauteate of the Welsh Rugby Team. You only have to read his poem 'Mametz Wood', about a bloody WWI struggle between Welsh and German soldiers to secure the strategically important Wood, to understand that. (The casualties in this single battle were astronomical; part of the wider Somme campaign.) Other poems are equally good. Owen Sheers was born in Fiji and brought up in Abergavenny. He has travelled widely, especially in Africa. He has won a number of major prizes, including the Somerset Maugham Award for his poetry anthology, 'Skirrid Hill'.His novel, 'Resistance' has met widespread accalim.
