This DVD of the Complete Ring Cycle by Richard Wagner from the Metropolitan Opera in NYC is a brilliant production not only in terms of the quality of the singers, the orchestration under James Levine, but the staging is simple yet very effective in portraying Wagner's vision of this epic saga. No transposition of this Nordic saga into modern era for example, by staging it in the Industrial Revolution, replacing the depths of the Rhine with a hydroelectric power dam and featuring grimy sets populated by men and gods in 19th and 20th century business suits! No need to re-invent the wheel! All singers in these incredibly taxing roles are superb and you could not have asked for a better production. If you have never seen The Ring in its entirety, make THIS the recording to watch. You won't be disappointed!
very speedy delivery, based on viewing two of the four dvds, quality is good, allowing for age of productions the sets are well done and a welcome change from the "avant-garde" cop-outs that are now standard for Ring productions. The singing is generally of good to excellent calibre and the orchestral playing and conducting is overall very sold if lacking in fire for some parts of the opera. Very pleased.
