Lewis Milestone's adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's anti-war novel is a masterpiece whose power to disturb remains undiminished by the passage of time. The film stars Lew Ayres as the young Paul Bauman, who, along with a group of his teenaged classmates, are conscripted into the German army during WWI. One of the most historically significant films of the twentieth century.
The combat scenes in particular appear surprisingly realistic given that this film is about ninety years old. The film otherwise is of its era, but some of the scenes are quite imaginative in their shooting and setting. Depicting the war from the German side was a real innovation in 1930 and American war films tended to dwell on glory, but this film does the opposite.
