In medium format a focal length of 80mm is considered standard and portrait lenses are reckoned to be 140-150mm. So the Mamiya 110mm is neither one nor the other. However, my view is that conventional portrait lenses are un-flattering because having a narrow field of view the picture has to be taken from further away. This flattens perspective and makes people's ears look bigger. The 110 mm doesn't suffer from that. Portraits can be shot closer with more natural perspective. I believe you can't have too many lenses for medium format and the advantage of the 110 is that it's small and light and easy to take along. Mamiya have never made a bad lens and the optical quality of this one is very good.
