Synopsis
After seven weeks of fighting there was a need to break out of the Normandy bridgehead. The main narrative of this book will span the break-in from Caumont in July, through the battles of the following days, to the German counter-attacks in August, the German defense of Estry up to the mid-month, and the final withdrawal from Normandy., After seven weeks of bitter fighting there was a desperate need to break out of the Normandy bridgehead. In late July 1944 Lieutenant-General Sir Miles Dempsey's Second Army moved two entire corps from the Caen sector to the relatively quiet countryside around Caumont. Here, the British XXX Corps prepared to give battle, with VII Corps advancing in support on the right flank between XXX Corps and the American first Army. The offensive did not go to plan. While the XXX Corps attack stalled, VIII Corps surged ahead. With the experienced 11th Armoured and 15th Scottish Divisions in the lead and Guards Armoured close behind, a deep penetration was made, threatening to take the pivotal city of Vire and unhinge General Hausser's German Seventh Army. The main narrative of this book will span the initial break-in from Caumont on 30 July, through the armored battles of the following days, to the desperate German counter-attacks of 4 - 6 August, the no less desperate German defense of Estry up to the middle of the month, and the final withdrawal from Normandy. The book also examines Monty's refusal to seize Vire, the disputed Anglo-American border and the Operation's impact on the German Mortain offensive.

- o***w (18)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseI've been a customer at For The Historian's bookstore in Gettysburg many times but this was my first eBay purchase from them. The magazine was brand new, as described, and the shipping cost was reasonable. They shipped the magazine promptly and it was very well packed in a cardboard sleeve. I'll definitely buy from this seller again.

Shipping and packaging was a spot on. I valued his support in helping me in making my decision. In comparison to all that was available this was the best value. Great communication and went the extra yard to help satisfy his customer. An excellent seller to the eBay community...thanks again! - e***t (432)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseI love For the Historian Bookstore, both the actual shop and the ebay site. The item shipped on time, and was exactly as described. It was packaged in a way to protect the item, especially since it was made out of paper. I found this to be a good value, because it was a used book. I highly recommend this seller to everyone, and would definitely use them again.
