I purchased this engine breather oil collector for use on my 1988 FLTC. My bike has an early Evolution engine, not a “head breather” so I felt my options for an oil catch can were limited. This one fills the bill and it is small enough to have a few options to mount it. The polished finish is attractive, too.

Small, Highly Polished & Works Well.
I'm a 70 year old mechanical & electrical engineer who's fitted more oil catch-cans than I care to remember. I have a 1986 Harley Davidson motorcycle with an EVO 1338cc V-twin engine with 182,000 kilometres on the clock. Having a large crankshaft turning at high speed that's spraying oil out in small droplets from the big-end bearing, (having a needle roller bearing big-end, oil flow is much greater than that needed on a common slipper bearing requires). Mixed with natural blow-by, ventilation or breathing of the crankcase becomes a problem on combustion engines. The oil vapour, unlike in motor cars & trucks with engines between the wheels, can't be vented onto the road unless you like riding on a very slippery rear tyre. The oil vapour, unlike in motor cars & trucks with engines between the wheels, can't be vented onto the road unless you like riding on a very slippery rear tyre. You could as is now the case in later models, vent the vapour into the air filter and recirculate it through the intake where it gets burnt in the combustion chambers. That would be good if the oil in the vapour didn't also stick to the inlet valves and build up hard carbon deposits on the exhaust valve that will either burn out the valve seat or jam the valve itself open resulting in bent push rods etc. But who wants to remove the heads every 30,000 kilometres? Anyway, the only answer is to remove the oil droplets from these vapours before it's either vented to the atmosphere or air intake. This oil catch-can is very small, made from solid aluminium and is very highly polished. Obviously, due to its size, it would need draining every 1,000 kilometres if used on a motor car or truck, but for my old Harley it will be good for 6 or 7 thousand and it takes only minutes to drop the plug & drain. My engine now stays dry & oil free, and my engine runs much cleaner. Even the filter on the breather remains clean. I didn't run it back through the intake as blow-by is mostly CO2 and I want oxygen going into the engine that is needed for fuel to burn & expand. This in turn, delivers more power & better fuel economy. The best part or most important to motorcycle owners, is that this unit looks great on your bike. My Electra Glide came with so much chrome, this breather/catch-can just blends in naturally. My EVO has never needed topping up with engine oil, however I have never agreed with recirculating crankcase vapours so previously just had a filter fitted on the breather hose end. Every now and then, generally when starting cold, I'd get about a half teaspoon of oil thrown out that spread over the inner primary case & near side crank case. A little oil spreads a long way and when dirt sticks to it, well let's say it doesn't look good and there's always a danger of it finding its way to the drive belt or the rear tyre. No more worries now or work cleaning. I haven't seen any oil on the motor since fitting this catch-can & breather. I've travelled 1,560 kilometres since fitting and I just checked the catch can for oil. On draining the catch-can I recovered a whole tablespoon of oil. I don't recommend reusing catch-can oil as dust or contaminants could get mixed in the captured oil before it gets put back in the oil tank. I obviously highly recommend this beautiful and very useful breather/catch-can for all large capacity V-twin engines and this 5 STAR eBay seller. PS. A bit of info: Large cc air cooled engines have an E grind on the piston due to the massive increase in piston expansion when warmed up, so when cold, extra blow-by is normal. With the later water cooled engines having a C grind, blow-by is not such a problem, however I still recommend fitting this catch-can to keep your valves & piston tops mostly carbon free. By purchasing a 3/8" barbed fitting, you can still route a second hose from the catch-can back to the intake fitting behind the air filter. great idea that needs refining
yes its a rip snorter, the extra extension supplied made it possible to fit the little air filter to the catch can . the previous two i purchased i had to pay a machinist to make up a fitting so that the little air filter could fit onto the catch can ......the drain plug should be of a standard bolt and thread size easily purchased off the shelf...... for some reason i lost the drain plug fell out and a replacement drain plug had to be custom made as you don't supply replacement catch can drain plugs..... i hope this information will be helpful in the future production of your catch cansyes its a rip snorter, the extra extension supplied made it possible to fit the little air filter to the catch can . the previous two i purchased i had to pay a machinist to make up a fitting so that the little air filter could fit onto the catch can ......the drain plug should be of a standard bolt and thread size easily purchased off the shelf...... for some reason i lost the drain plug fell out and a replacement drain plug had to be custom made as you don't supply replacement catch can drain plugs..... i hope this information will be helpful in the future production of your catch cans
