About this product

Product Information

In Karel Reisz's film, based on Robert Stone's novel DOG SOLDIERS, John Converse (Michael Moriarty), a Marine combat veteran, returns to Vietnam as a war correspondent. He is overwhelmed by the challenges that face him, and so he decides that in an insane world, it makes sense to to smuggle heroin into the United States, and joins in with a conspiracy group suspected to have CIA connections. His ex-marine buddy, Ray Hicks (Nick Nolte), now a merchant marine sailor, helps him smuggle the heroin to San Francisco. When Ray delivers the drugs to John's wife Marge (Tuesday Weld), thugs disguised as Federal agents steal the drugs. Outraged at being double crossed, Hicks takes Marge with him on the run, followed now by real CIA agents. In their flight through the drug underworld of L.A. and down into New Mexico, Hicks discovers that Marge is a junkie herself. Though she is physically weak, she nonetheless possesses an inner strength to match Hick's exterior strength. Nolte, in one of his first staring roles, is unequaled in his expression of intelligence and sensitivity, while being simultaneously tougher than nails. Reisz keeps the action and characters in the forefront, and in doing so keeps this heavily allegorical story about the corrupting effect of the Vietnam War on America from collapsing under its own weight.

  • A Great Movie Nobody Ever Saw

One of the smartest anti-Vietnam movies ever made, despite a excellent cast and a great script (from the Robert Stone book, "Dog Soldiers")not many people have seen this excellent movie from 1978. Nick Nolte gives one of his best performances ever as Ray Hicks, a Nietzsche loving ex-marine who's decided he's not taking any crap from anybody after surviving a tour in Vietnam. Michael Moriarty is excellent too as Ray's ol' hippie marine buddy, who decides to dabble in the heroin smuggling business, bringing Ray in as a partner. It becomes immediately obvious Moriarty and his valium-addicted suburban wife Tuesday Weld are in over the head as both junkies and cops both pursue them looking for two kilos of pure heroin Ray smuggled into the country. Moriarty and ...

  • Superb and underappreciated movie.

"Who'll Stop the Rain" (1978) Nick Nolte at his finest! He becomes the character and plows thru the movie with a gusto and passion that is second to none. Tuesday Weld proves once again why she is one of the finest actresses of her generation (she gives a subtle but perfect portrayal of a left-wing book store owner with a smack addiction. Weld doesn't overplay the role in a way some actress might have done). They lead the cast in this Vietnam-era drug smuggling movie. I've never been a huge fan of Michael M. But, he does a good job as Weld's husband. The rest of the supporting cast is entertaining to watch if not a bit over-the-top. But, that somehow gives the film a true sense of terror and danger but also a strange perhaps intentional amusement. Who'll Stop the Rain is well performed ...

  • Nolte: Never let up - never back down

This movie showcases Nolte at his best - tough, sharp, and taking no crap from anyone. As an ex-marine, he gets dragged into the fight of his life by a journalist buddy gone off the track, who enlists him to smuggle drugs back into the US. Great location filming, simple but intense dialog, and a wrenching ending all make this a memorable film.

  • Drug drama

Some violence but entertaining with good acting.
