The the Designer Essential Index by Jim Krause
This is actually a 3-book kit. Each book in the flip-open box is not the same size and all are paperback. The main book is the same as the individual Design Essential Index books from 2006...exact same. This edition though comes with two other smaller books that help with more details. It's not an easy-to-read or follow along book like Microsoft Office either, so you must have patience. The last thing that is different about this book kit is it comes in a box. Personally I'm not going to carry about a box in my back pack with my computer and other books....whose idea was it to put books in a box? Take them out of the box and remember to save the box for easy shipping on ebay later! Still a great book overall and it's reasonably priced on ebay...spend money on going to school, save ... One out of Three
I was mainly looking for the Color Index and then came upon the series and thought "why not get all three?" I should have stuck to my initial impulses and just gotten the Color Index. I find it is the only one i really use (and it is useful). I flipped through the other two once, and never picked them up again. Maybe one day i will? Unlikely though - there are much better books on graphic design than the layout index. If you dont already have Ellen Lupton's Thnking With Type get that instead. Well Jim Krause has done it again with his second version of books dedicated to the graphic arts. Ever Graphic designer should have these books in there bag of tricks. It does not matter if you are seasoned or a beginner, these book will help all around. The color index gives you rgb and cmyk color codes so you can make quick color plans with out having to do a bunch trial and error that could wast time. The type idea also does well to give you an array of type treatments on the fly. The basic design book can really take you to back to the basics and help you stay in check with you design. All in all this is one great set of books that graphic artist and Designers should not be with out.
