A classic British spy mystery, and one of Hitchcock's best, THE 39 STEPS is the story of an innocent man who struggles to prove his innocence. Robert Donat gets more than he bargained for when he brings home a mysterious woman who confesses to be a British agent on the hot trail of a dangerous spy ring. The woman is killed in Donat's apartment and he immediately finds himself on the run, burdened with the charge for her murder and the dangerous knowledge of her mission. The film is distinguished by its pioneering use of contrapuntal sound effects, as well as the dynamism between Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll.

    Excellent period thriller

    Though this film is over forty years old, it is still very watchable. The film is set in 1914 before the start of the First World War, interesting to see all aspects of that very well recreated period: both horse drawn and motor car traffic in the streets, a steam train, people's dress and attitudes. Robert Powell excelled in the lead role, and all the cast contributed hugely to this thriller. The copy of the film I bought played perfectly, making it a quirky extra birthday present for a 39 year old!

    Adventure story.

    Although I know this story very well and this version is nearer to the book than the old black and white version, I did not enjoy it as much as I was hoping to. To be honest, I found it a little bland. A shame really as the cast is good. It is an adventure story.

    It's a good story. And the dvd is good quality.

    I watched this film with my husband as he mentioned he hadn't seen it for a long time. He enjoyed. It took me a while to get into the story line but in the end I liked it.
