Despite his weak eyesight, Rudyard Kipling's son Jack was determined to serve in the military during World War I. Unlike many parents, Kipling was adamant that his son have the opportunity to see action and uphold the values that were a constant motif in his writing. By way of influence Jack finally made it to the front, never to return, and Kipling would spend years of his life trying to uncover his son's fate. This Masterpiece Theatre production is the story of one aspect of the writer's life that was more tragic than anything depicted in his adventure stories. Daniel Radcliffe takes off Harry Potter's robes to star in this serious drama.

    Truthfull History!!

    IT tells how badly this war was conducted,my father served and was wounded but would never talk about it except to say the "Brass" we utterly useless. It just proved he was right!!

    My Boy Jack on PBS in the USA

    Americans know Rudyard Kipling for the Jungle books and 'If'. Now we know what a complicated character he was and how human, flawed and loving he was. How could anyone who loved their son as much as Kipling did consciously send him off to war? Did Kipling love his country more than his son? Did he even know his son? And John, nicknamed Jack, just like President Kennedy, was the bravest man of his day, did he realize the sacrifices he faced? Especially that of his life? This movie poses these questions but like my definition of excellent film, allows you to answer for yourself and the characters stay with you long after the credits roll.

    A Film Worth Seeing and Remembering

    A tragic story, well staged and acted. A must see, because we too soon forget not only the horrific inhumanity of WWI (and all war) but the personal anguish of those who lost their loved ones. "The paths of glory leads only to the grave."

    wonderful movie! makes me cry! I love it!

    It is great story with wonderful acting! such a sad movie hard to believe its true. Love the acting! BBC has brought us another prize of a film.
