Very Basic
I bought these as grade B intending to modify them. Grade B it turns out meant broken plastic cabinet corners amongst other things. Once I got the cabinets open I realized I had a much bigger job than I thought. For a start the cabinets are made of 12mm chipboard. (Normally 18mm recommended as minimum thickness.) The screws holding the drive units on have been driven in without pilot holes being drilled. Subsequently, the wood behind most of the screws was damaged. The midrange and tweeter are both very cheap piezo units. The mid can be bought for £1.99. They are fed through a power resistor to prevent damage at high frequencies. There is no crossover. There is no wadding inside either. The speaker is wired with stranded bell wire. There are two mono jackplug 1/4" sockets connected in ... I bought these as grade B intending to modify them. There are two mono jackplug 1/4" sockets connected in parallel, which I presume is for daisy-chaining which I won't be doing. Any kind of speaker cabinet needs to be well sealed. This one isn't. The bass driver(which is of half decent quality) has a rubber gasket on it for rear baffle mounting, here it's mounted on the front of the baffle with no sealing of any kind. Worse still the drive units are mounted on the felt surface with makes a poor seal inevitable. In use all this results in a coloured sound with clear dips in the frequency and boomy bass. Some tracks sound okish. With others bizzare things happen like the vocals might be much lower than they should be. I wanted the speakers for my karaoke show and have spent a week working on them already correcting the faults above except the cabinet thickness. Even after this they won't be hifi. I suspect most purchasers won't be prepared to carry out similar mods.
