CLASSIC DRAMA UNFAIRLY FORGOTTEN
The whole series of NAKED CITY was, in it's day, a very modern, adult series. Make no mistake, these are idealized people, who, though they inhabit a grubby world of tenaments, petty crime and lower class day-to-day struggles, everyone seems erudite and mature in a way we never see any more. What's called "Realism" has over the years crushed out this style acting in favor of the illiterate kid-forever slobs we see now. Like a lot of ABC's dramas at the time, NC took chances. A story would hinge on explaining a character's philosphy behind his criminal activity more than just shoot-outs and car chases, though there are those too. Often a story will have a tragic or unresolved ending, reflecting the three detectives (Paul Burke,Harry Bellaver & Horace Macmahon) temporary contact with the ... It's shot on actual locations in New York, including their mythical 65th precinct station house (the 18th on W54th St. standing in), lending an air of nostalgia for New Yorkers. The theme music is probably among the most beautiful ever devised for a TV show. The presentaion in the Boxed sets are better than the single discs offered, because you also get the bumpers and 2 or 3 commercials from each episode. This is a great addition, though I'd like to see them not seperated, and included in the proper spots. I guess I'm just old enough to recall the flow of a 1960's show, where the bumps, ads and Station ID are inserted and where the show picks up. Without them, it seems to disrupt that flow. But kudos nonetheless. I'm lead to understand the episodes included are in fact not specially selected for their merit, but rather the haphazard of chance, in that some legalities must be accomodated with actors or their estates for the right to use programmes with them in it, and a great deal of the time this couldn't be done. So the series sprints by, often with only one episode per month. I hope that these sets do well enough for them to persue the episodes now in legal limbo, and finally put out the entire series. It's a shame that it's been forgotten as much as it has...that's what 45 years will do, but maybe it will be re-discovered via DVD.

Terrific writing, superb character and starring roles, pioneering cinematography and directing, this show features no formula but excellence. The recurring stars are featured in many episodes, downplayed in others to allow guest actors the opportunity to stretch character development. Obviously, such a show could not be made today. A must-have for anyone who believes TV and artistic quality and not mutually exclusive terms.NAKED CITY was one of the great classic dramatic series on the tube, undeservedly neglected. I bought Naked City Box Set 2 because it was an intelligent TV show about detectives of NYPD and It was filmed on location in New York City adding realism and credibility. We are talking about a show made between 1960 and 1963. Another reason is the acting, the guest stars were actors who later became major stars like Robert Duvall, Tuesday Weld, Walter Matthau, Robert Redford, Jon Voight, Suzanne Pleshette, William Shatner, Christopher Walken, Betty Field, Dustin Hoffman, etc. I have the Box Sets 1, 2 and 3 and I hope that Image Entertaiment is planning soon a release with the rest of the episodes including the first season (1958-1959) that was a half-hour series.I bought Naked City Box Set 2 because it was an intelligent TV show about detectives of NYPD and It was filmed on location in New York City adding realism and credibility.
