One of the few worthy replacements of the much-vaunted Nikon 24-70.

This lens, shall I say, is equal but different than that of its closest competitor, the Nikon 24-70 VR-based E or G lens. Image wise, it performs better than the Nikon at some magnifications than at others. It also has its own proprietary vibration reduction called Vibration Control (VC). Some say the Nikon focuses faster, however, I have absolutely no complaints with the responsiveness of the Tamron. The reports suggest some vignetting on the Tamron that the Nikon doesn't have, but I haven't noticed any personally. Feel free to scour Youtube for more comparisons; there's plenty out there. You'll see that the Tamron is very much a worthy replacement for Nikon lenses. Price to feature wise, the Tamron can't be beat at the moment.

  • Most critical review

    Disappointed...

I suffered through a dozen pro reviews Before buying. I’m convinced Tamaron is sending a lot of free gear to reviewers. Lens is average at best. Slow reaction to focus. Very challenged in bright light to adjust aperture and or speed. Miserable above f7 in all conditions. If I could I would return it for the Sigma with no second thoughts.

  • Updated Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 VC DI G2; is it worth the upgrade?

Purchased this newer model at a great price to replace my original Tamron SP 24-70mm VC DI USD f/2.8 (G1) used on my Nikon D750 & D780. (Tamron produced the first 24-70mm Auto Focus zoom with Image Stabilization, or Vibration Reduction for Nikon.) The new version looks more modern, slightly lighter to the feel, ruggedly built, works fine in snow storms, functions similarly as the original; however, AF on the G2 seems slightly faster, especially on my D780 and on my Nikon Z cameras using the FTZ adapter. Both lenses produce similar image quality with the G2 showing sharper corners at wide open apertures. One thing I noticed is that when using the G2 for video on my D780, it seems to have greater focus breathing than the original.

  • G2 has snappy low-light focusing

I have a D810 and I had to make an AF-finetuning adjustment of +19, which I'm not thrilled about. Most of this is due to it being a 3rd party, I assume. My Nikon lenses are adjusted at +5, so probably the rest is a 3rd party lens issue. But after calibration I did a handle held test at 1/13, f2.8 and ISO 10,000 and it quickly nailed the focus on my target. Any darker and I wouldn't be able to see. After making a color temperature adjustment the shot came out surprisingly good and perfectly in focus, though a little grainy, but better than no shot at all. Also I've found no issues with the sharpness of the this lens and overall I'm pleases with my purchase. I purchased this used for $650 because seller said the optics were perfect and they are, and that's what I care about.

  • Overall it’s a good product but...

Mine had a little focus issue that the previous owner hidden me, despite that the fine focus has to be changed in between-14 and -20 depending the cameras You have. It’s well made at least apparently, and probably it’s the best choice not Nikon You can buy. I’ve the G2 version means has the electronic iris. The VC is efficient. If compared with the new Nikon E sharpness, colours and especially AF speed are not the same level. The price it costs (US version) doesn’t worth the value of the item itself especially because the Nikon costs only an average +30%. The same talking about the 70-200/2.8 the Nikon E is simply the best one ever made. My suggest, if You are a pro skip it! Invest on Nikon, if You are an amateur there’s no reason why to spend more than $1000 for something like that, ...
