About this product

Product Information

ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) refers to a troublesome cluster of behaviours (including inattentiveness, impulsiveness and overactivity) that cause a child to underachive academically and to behave poorly despite having a good intellect and receiving quality parenting. It is often referred to as a boy problem , as more boys than girls are affected in a ratio of 6:1. It has a strong hereditary link: most children with ADD have a close relative, usually male, with some features of the condition. Though a number of children grow out of it, 60% will carry some degree of it with them into adulthood. A number of other conditions are closely associated with ADD. Over 50% of affected children have specific learning disabilities, while oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder frequently coexist with ADD. By presenting a clear overview of the condition and dispelling some of the myths, this book will help parents, teachers and health professionals understand ADD. The text contains well-tried, practical strategies to cope with common ADD problems in the home and classroom. There are suggestions to improve language, handwriting and self-esteem. The book also looks at various therapies and the long-term benefits of stimulant medication. The appendices include summaries of the most recent research findings, current diagnosis criteria, parent-teacher questionnaries, and computer programs to help learning and where to get help.
